Albert John Hockings was the Mayor of the Brisbane Municipal Council and a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. In 1865, Hockings headed a subscription list to found a grammar school in Brisbane.
By March of the same year, Hockings had raised £1,300 and appointed a committee to continue the fundraising for BGS.
